Stars rich in α-elements rejuvenated by absorbing their companions

Astronomers have uncovered the nature of a mysterious population of massive α-element-rich giant stars that appear younger than older stars in the Milky Way's thick disk. It turned out that in fact their age is comparable to the age of the old stellar population of our galaxy, and they acquired a large mass due to the accretion of matter from the companion stars of the asymptotic giant branch.
